| Matakana Pictures Exhibitions Artists | Ann Shelton was born in Timaru, New Zealand. She currently lives and works in Auckland city. Since she completed her Masters in Fine Art at The University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada (2002), Rim Books has published Sheltons second book ‘Public Places’. Shelton was the 2004 Govett Brewster New Zealand Artist In Residence, during her time at the gallery she produced the solo museum show ‘A Kind of Sleep.’ Commentary on Shelton’s work is extensive, consistently referring to the potent effect of her inverted dual images; a doubling technique that has become a distinct characteristic of her work in recent years. Sheltons’ work has been shown widely in major public institutions, commercial galleries and artist-run spaces within New Zealand and overseas. Shelton’s first book Redeye (Rim Books, 1997) was launched at Artspace in Auckland, the accompanying exhibition toured New Zealand. Redeye was then re-published internationally, in that same year, by Dewi Lewis Publishing, England. Her solo shows include ‘Once More From the Street’ at Starkwhite, ‘Vacant Possesion’ at McNamara gallery and ‘Nine Lives’ at 1.6 Gallery in Canada. Group shows include ‘Coming Home in the Dark’ at the Christchurch Art Gallery, ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ at The Govett Brewster Art Gallery and ‘Dead Ringer’ at Gus Fisher Gallery. Shelton is represented by Starkwhite and Paul McNamara Gallery in New Zealand and 1.6 Gallery in Vancouver, Canada. She currently lectures in photography at Manukau School of Visual Arts, Auckland University at Manukau. |
