The Manukau Harbour is the second largest Harbour in Aoteoroa/New Zealand. The entrance is only 1800 meters wide, yet there are extreme differences between the South Head and the North Head.
The soil on the South Head consists of silt and sand. Strong dominant Westerly winds have drifted to create sand dunes, these currently measure 234 metres above sea level. Once clothed in dense forest the colonizers cleared this land for farming.
These two series of photographs, taken in 2004, show history continues to repeat around the Manukau Harbour , as landowners make development and profits a priority over the stability of the land.
