	Solstice: 4.June - 6.August 2005 Kiwi Cowboys This series “Kiwi Cowboys” was recorded at Rodeo events in Warkworth, Helensville, Paparoa and Raetihi from the 1st January to the 20th March 2005. Derived from the practical use of farm and ranch stock handling, rodeo has been a nationwide sport in New Zealand since the early 1900s, reflecting the evolution of the true, blue, kiwi cowboy of Aotearoa. The sharing of masculine values bonding across the generations is portrayed in these images. Viewed from behind the chutes as man and animal prepare to fight the clock in the rodeo arena. Shot in black and white on 120mm medium format and 35mm cameras these black and white images are hand printed on quality fibre base archivally treated papers. As a recipient of a Creative N.Z. Te Waka Toi grant I am working on a two year project creating quality black & white handprinted archival images depicting some of the Tangata Whenua issues in Northland. Chapters to this series include: Mohinui Marae, Noho Rangimarie Ngawha, Whale Boning with Ngati Wai, Te Ture Whenua,Waitangi, Seabed and Foreshore Hikoi. Important to my work is the need to strictly portray “as is”. Reflecting the enchantment of each subject realistically and openly. Free from the entrapment of fantasy which enforces the harsh, self generated rules laid on ourselves and our youth by todays artificial standards.
