| Matakana Pictures Exhibitions Artists | Born Auckland, New Zealand in 1968. Lives and works in Wellington, New Zealand. Completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography at the University of Auckland in 1992, and a Master of Fine Arts at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada in 2002. In 1996 he was awarded a research grant from Creative New Zealand to photograph neo-classical and fascist architecture in Germany. In 1998 he was the recipient of the inaugural Creative New Zealand-funded artist residency at Artspace, Sydney, Australia. He has also completed residencies at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in 1999 and at the Waikato Museum of Art and History in Hamilton in 2000. He has represented New Zealand in the 11th Biennale of Sydney in 1998 and in the 25th Biennale of Sao Paulo in 2002. Other group exhibitions include Flight Patterns at Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art in 2000; Guarene Arte 2000 at Palazzo Re Rebaudengo, Guarene d’ Alba, Italy, in 2000; and A Molecular History of Everything at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne, in 2004. His one-person exhibition The Homely comprising eighty photographs was launched by City Gallery Wellington in 2001 and has subsequently toured Australasia. His work has been reviewed and featured in international art magazines including Artforum, Art and Text, and Creative Camera. His own writings have been published in journals including Art Journal, Art and Text, and Art New Zealand. The artist has curated photographic exhibitions that have toured New Zealand. He currently teaches in the School of Fine Arts at Massey University Wellington. |
