Show Number 9: 13.August - 9.October 2005 Kakashi We left Tokyo on our journey to the countryside. Much sooner than expected we were passing through small villages and onto a narrow winding road with green rice fields all around. Suddenly out of nowhere scarecrows appeared throwing sticks and straw in our path and tapping urgently at the window. We couldn’t go on. As our small yellow Beetle slowed to a stop they scurried back to the fields and planted themselves deeply in the mud, laughing gaily at our surprise. As if in slow motion I reached for my camera and moved toward the gathering where they were nestling into position. I made a snap and the first scarecrow instantly froze, then the next, and the next ‘til they were all firmly transfixed. The sun glinted silver on their faces and the wind blew freely. The rice rustled, whispering the tale of the Kakashi beyond the great city; the Kakashi who come out to play when it’s time to look another way. |
