Frontier 2001 These photographs were taken in the Okefenokee National Park, Georgia, USA. This body of work is concerned with the way in which ‘the wilderness’, is a construct rather than a reality. The images exhibited, shot in this heritage location quote 2 dominant kinds of projection onto this site in the American south. The first image with its intense light and sense of scale mimics the grand drama of the unpopulated American landscape typified by photographers such as Ansel Adams, and publications such as National Geographic which, in its time has ‘captured’ every inaccesible landscape imaginable; including the backwaters of the Okefenokee. The second, darker image portrays the same location in a more gothic manner, bringing to mind the crime and violence that is so often associated with the swamps; an ever shifting, sprawling no-mans-land where law and civilisation disappear. |
