Maree Wilks
Photo: Dennis Brett

I had my first camera when I was 10 in 1965. It was a Kodak Instamatic. My first film was colour taken in Roxburgh,Central Otago, where I was born. While I liked colour I felt dissatisfied at the distance the image appeared when printed.
I started photographing people instead using black and white as it was way cheaper for a school kid. Loved people shots. Much better than the far away landscape images-I thought.
During my teenager years I was the only sober one in our crowd Taking photographs was more important to me than drinking Cold Duck.
Luckily for me, I realised the importance of filing, coding and keeping negatives safe as many others lost theirs over the years.

Photography has been a major part of my life- mostly the costly side. I practiced different angles and settings with my six children which must have bored everyone silly. But practice was what was needed.
I retrained from clerical into Visual Arts for three years, before gaining my Diploma in Journalism in the mid 1990’s.
My darkroom is huge and is used by many B/W photographers because printing, in Southland, it is fast becoming a thing of the past.
I have since tutored at Southern Institute of Technology, held workshops, and did a stint as a commercial photographer for some years.
But glad to be back in my comfort zone of doco and photojournalism.

34. May and Friends

May was the housekeeper for some friends.  We had a few quiets’ this night at their place.  May joined in much to our surprise!

35. Greg Mulvey

I took many images on this angle because it just felt right.  Greg is the general manager of our very successful Invercargill Licencing Trust.  It’s a good iconic shot of him considering his job.

36. Ben and Shirley

Everyone danced to Joe Cocker-Cocker Happy and Led Zep in those days.  These two were often the first to get dancing no matter the size of the space.  Have not seen either of them for many years.

37. Julie’s Stir

Twins, Ross and Robin, were frequent party goers. (Back sitting).  We were all friends and usually sat together most of the evening, unless someone was brave enough to dance.  This stir was held in her parents garage.

38. The Debuntante

It was so typical at stirs to see family photos on the wall.  Marie Quinn, now 60, was presented to the Bishop some years early at the Debutante Ball.

39. Hi Julie

The stirs, usually held in sitting rooms, were always packed.  Some nights we would have seven parties to go to.  Such was the rage in those days.  Julie always a good sort, made this image by spotting me.

40. Jimmy, after hours

It was not until the 1990’s we were able to purchase alcohol on Sundays.  This image shows Jimmy buying grog on a Sunday, which usually meant travelling out of town and avoiding cops.  So much fun.

41. Yeah Yeah!

Another typical shot of Boys High guys getting into a full-on conversation…probably about nothing.  Never-the-less, they were and still are a great crowd of blokes.

42. Peter in Vauxhall

My brother Peter and friend Paddy Boyle went everywhere in this car, a real grunt machine, which made them look tough-or so they thought.

44. Brian and Friends

This image was taken at Thornbury 30 mins west of Invercargill.  All good fun, plenty of quarts and food.  My mother was the cook and organiser.  Brian showed a typical reaction at getting his photo taken.

45. Clean up

6.30am; Mum once again organised the big clean up after the stir.  Thirty-six dozen empty quarts were gathered. We finished at 6.30am.  Everyone had sobered up by this stage.  Mum went on to cook us all breakfast.  Good old Mum (centre).

The good old Catholic days when Rosary Beads were draped everywhere.  The party went on regardless and the beads were still there the next day.

47. Marist Boys

A bit of rivalry between Boys High and Marist was considered the norm.  These guys were singing their Marist Anthem.  The trouble was, they were the only ones who knew the words. Another good stir at Barbara Keen’s place.
