| Matakana Pictures Exhibitions Artists | Mark Smith was born in Hastings, 1963. He has been a photographer since 1983, starting out as a press photographer with the Hawkes Bay Herald Tribune, and finishing his training with the New Zealand Herald. Since 1989, Smiths’ work has appeared in numerous National and International magazines and newspapers. He has also maintained a strong commitment to his photographic practice, exhibiting regularly over the years in both public and dealer spaces. In 1999 along with Deborah Smith and Victoria Ferguson, they formed CAKE collective. An urban poster exhibition displayed on the streets of Auckland, their commitment is to present their photographic work to a very wide audience. There have been 5 CAKE exhibitions, the last being exhibited late 2002. In 2000 Smith’s work was published in the book ‘ Neil Finn once removed’. Released internationally with Sanctuary Publishing, the book has received much publicity and acclaim, here and overseas. Smith’s latest project involves revisiting the genre of portrait photography. In April 2002 he began a long term plan of photographing a wide cross-section of the community. In 2002 Smith had works included in the “Sothebys” show, New York, in Australian andNew Zealand Photography, Australian Embassy and New York. In 2004 he contributed work to “The Smiths”, with Lorraine, Deborah, Maree and Tyrone Smith, Snow White Gallery, Auckland. In 2004 Mark Smith held a solo exhibition titled ‘Person Place, or Animal’ at Artis Gallery Auckland. Mark Smith is Represented by Artis Gallery Auckland. |
