| Matakana Pictures Exhibitions Artists | Professional Qualifications: BFA (Auckland), MFA (Sydney) Professional Position: Senior Lecturer, Elam School of Fine Arts As an artist I work primarily with the medium of photography. I have actively exhibited my work over a 25 year period, both nationally and internationally, at major art events such as the Esslingen Photo Triennale, 1989, the Sydney Biennale, 1990, and the Sharjah Biennale in 1999, and in significant exhibitions such as Photography Now, 1989 at the Victoria and Albert Museum (to commemorate the first 150 years of Photography). My most major project to date has been The Virtues, 1996, a traveling exhibition that went to eight public venues in New Zealand, and its accompanying book Under The Aegis: The Virtues, 1997. This series was awarded a major prize in 1999 by an international jury at the Sharjah Biennale. Public collections that hold my work include: the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa; the Sarjeant Gallery, Wanganui, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth; the Dunedin Public Art Gallery; and the Auckland Art Gallery. International collections include: The Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Bibliothèque Nationale and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; and the National Gallery, Canberra. I have been granted Arts Council sponsorship for several projects and events, including a major travel award in 1985 to travel to the USA and Europe to attend photography events and exhibitions, travel to Houston, USA in 1988 to deliver a lecture on New Zealand Photography at the Houston Photo Fest, as well as assistance for the publication of Under the Aegis in 1997. In 1992 I received a Möet and Chandon residency in France. I have lectured at the Elam School of Fine Arts, The University of Auckland, since the mid 1980’s and been head of Photography for around 10 of those years. |
