Achernar 10.February - 2.April 2006 I live in a city of cranes. The historic buildings of Auckland are continually being demolished, making way for malls and shoe-box apartments. I feel a real lack of control over my environment. I have tried signing petitions but the buildings come down anyway. The property developers rule this architecturally-challenged town. My photographs reflect the attitude I have towards my surroundings. In a city of constant change I find myself seeking out the small sections of the urban environment that have been over-looked. These sites that have not been cleaned up or commercialised represent the Auckland I grew up with. This is the image I still hold in my head as an ideal. By pointing my camera in a certain direction I can isolate the part that interests me from the rest of its surroundings. The power of editing allows me to control how a place is portrayed, without the need for digital processes or camera tricks. What is happening outside of the viewfinder ceases to exist and I can create something new I carefully compose my images, introducing people into the spaces as representatives of my idealised community. This is not the Auckland that other people see. |
