Since graduating from university in the late ’80s (in law and politics) his photographic activities have been challenged by illness (ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). Today he devotes as much time and energy as possible to the pursuit of photographic projects and learning about photography. He works almost exclusively in black and white and his work has become increasingly people-oriented in the last two years In 2005 Richard exhibited alongside the Mahurangi Group of artists, for whom he did a series of portraits; he has also exhibited at Art’s Desire Gallery in Warkworth. Richard prints digitally and now captures most of his images digitally as well. |

In the last few years I’ve been increasingly drawn to the work of natural light humanist photographers – such as Jane Bown, Marti Friedlander, Robert Doisneau and Henri Cartier-Bresson. I pursue both the straight portrait in which the subject is isolated from the background (Jane Bown) and the environmental portrait that shows the person in their surroundings (others mentioned above). The images included in this exhibition are the result of both approaches. The environmental portraits are the products of a slowly evolving series of photos of people in the workplace, in particular in the Warkworth region. A note about two of the images: Penny is a friend who had to have part of her tongue removed due to cancer; Mary-Ellen was undergoing chemo therapy at the time of her photo. |
